What is the difference between web design and web development?+
Web design is the visual and structural design of a website what it looks like, how information is organised, and how users interact with it. Web development is the technical implementation of that design the code that makes the design function in a browser, connects to databases and third-party systems, processes user interactions, and delivers the pages to visitors at the speed required for a good user experience. In practice, most professional website projects require both: design that is implemented into a working website through development. At Clickmasters, our design and development teams work in close collaboration the development team is involved from the wireframing stage to ensure that the design choices are technically achievable within the performance and functionality requirements of the project.
How long does web development take?+
Development timeline depends on the scope and complexity of the project. A custom WordPress website (20-30 pages, standard functionality, typical integrations) typically takes 5-8 weeks of development time after the design is approved. A custom Shopify theme (standard e-commerce functionality, up to 500 products) typically takes 4-6 weeks. A custom web application or headless build typically takes 10-20 weeks depending on the complexity of the application logic and the number of integrations required. Large enterprise projects can extend to 30+ weeks. These timelines assume timely client feedback and content provision at each stage delays in either extend development timelines proportionally.
What platform should we build our website on?+
The right platform depends on your specific requirements: the type of content you will be managing, the volume and nature of your website traffic, the integrations you need, and the technical capability of the team who will maintain the site after launch. WordPress is the right choice for most content-rich business websites, professional services firms, and marketing-focused platforms its flexibility and content management capability are unmatched for these use cases. Shopify is the right choice for e-commerce businesses its managed infrastructure and checkout optimisation make it the most efficient platform for online retail. Webflow is the right choice for design-forward websites where the marketing team needs a visual editing environment and the site does not require complex custom functionality. Next.js is the right choice for high-performance, high-traffic websites where standard platform performance is insufficient. We make specific recommendations based on your requirements during the initial consultation.
What are Core Web Vitals and why do they matter?+
Core Web Vitals are Google's standardised metrics for measuring the real-world user experience of web pages: LCP (Largest Contentful Paint, measuring load performance the time until the main content is visible), INP (Interaction to Next Paint, measuring interactivity the responsiveness of the page to user interactions), and CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift, measuring visual stability whether elements move unexpectedly as the page loads). Google uses Core Web Vitals as ranking factors in its search algorithm websites that achieve "Good" ratings on all three metrics receive a ranking advantage over equivalent websites with "Poor" ratings. Beyond their effect on rankings, Core Web Vitals directly measure the user experience: a website with poor Core Web Vitals is a website that frustrates users, and frustrated users do not convert.
How do you approach website security?+
Security is a baseline requirement on every website we build, not an optional feature. Our standard security implementation includes: SSL/TLS certificate installation and enforced HTTPS, HTTP security headers configuration (including Content Security Policy, X-Frame-Options, and HSTS), WordPress-specific security hardening (login protection, file permission configuration, admin URL customisation, XML-RPC disabling), regular software updates through our maintenance retainer service, malware scanning, and appropriate database security. For websites handling sensitive data, payment information, or personal data subject to GDPR, we implement the specific security controls required for compliance with applicable regulations.
Can you take over development of a website that was built by another developer?+
Yes we regularly take over maintenance and development of websites built by other teams. Before committing to ongoing work, we conduct a technical audit: reviewing the codebase quality and documentation, assessing the security posture, evaluating Core Web Vitals performance, auditing the plugin and dependency health (for WordPress), and identifying the technical debt that would require addressing to bring the website to a maintainable standard. We provide the audit findings transparently including cases where the technical debt is severe enough that rebuilding is more economical than maintaining the existing codebase.
Do you handle website hosting as well as development?+
Yes we manage hosting for client websites on cloud platforms appropriate to each project's requirements. For WordPress websites, we recommend and manage WP Engine or Kinsta (managed WordPress hosting with built-in performance optimisation and security features). For Next.js and headless builds, we use Vercel or Netlify. For custom applications requiring more infrastructure control, we deploy on AWS or Google Cloud. Our managed hosting service includes server configuration, CDN setup, SSL certificate management, backup management, and the monitoring and alerting that ensures rapid response to any performance or uptime issues.
What is included in a website maintenance retainer?+
Our monthly maintenance retainers include: platform updates applied in a staging environment and tested before production deployment, security monitoring and incident response, uptime monitoring with immediate alerting, performance monitoring with monthly Core Web Vitals reporting, monthly analytics reporting, and a designated number of hours for content updates, minor design changes, and small feature additions. Maintenance retainers are structured as monthly rolling agreements we do not lock clients into long-term contracts for maintenance services. The retainer rate depends on the complexity of the website and the hours allocated for ongoing development work.
How do I get started?+
Book a free technical consultation. We discuss your current website or the new website you need to build, your content management requirements, your performance expectations, your integration needs, and your timeline and budget. For existing websites, we can conduct a technical audit before committing to a development scope providing a specific assessment of the performance, security, and architectural issues that are limiting your website's effectiveness. No commitment required at the consultation stage.
